Some Place Like Home — Excerpt from Ch 2 It would be just like today if Daniel got stuck being someone’s first call. He’d heard the old phrase about “dressing for the job you want,” but this mechanic was taking it way too literally. Like he’d heard Daniel’s thoughts about his wardrobe, the man opened the buttons down his chest and tossed his dark shirt over a sunburned shoulder. His thin undershirt looked no better than Daniel’s, sweat-damp and more than a little see-through. The mechanic looked under the hood and leaned his weight into his back leg. “What’s wrong with it?” “Couldn’t tell you if I tried,” Daniel admitted. “It was smoking, so I pulled over.” “Figured that out yourself, did you?”
